Muszą oni umieć odczytywać i właściwie interpretować dane, prawidłowo przeprowadzać procedury serwisowe i wykonywać pomiary oscyloskopowe. Praktyka warsztatowa pokazuje, że nie jest to takie proste, a przecież dobry serwis i dobry mechanik musi sobie poradzić z wyzwaniami, jakie stawiają współczesne samochody. I to w jak najkrótszym czasie, bo czas to pieniądz.
Przyczyn wypadania zapłonu może być więcej niż sam tylko uszkodzony układ zapłonowy.
Technika i technologia stosowana w samochodach w bardzo szybkim tempie się zmieniają, a co za tym idzie – muszą zmieniać się również narzędzia stosowane przez serwisy samochodowe. Konieczne jest również stałe poszerzanie wiedzy mechaników. W starszych samochodach większość napraw stanowiły naprawy mechaniczne, natomiast obecnie większość problemów, z jakimi spotykają się warsztaty, to usterki elektryczne czy wręcz elektroniczne.
Wiele testerów diagnostycznych wyposażonych jest w oscyloskop, choć nie jest on zbyt często wykorzystywany podczas diagnostyki.
